The Cafe at Qupqugiaq

A summary of our experiments in creating a public gathering place. Guess what's coming next?

Qupqugiaq Cafe. 1997

Q Cafe & Eatery
Beth was a cook there, and she is sitting in a wonderful chair at the library right now.

Ten Legged Bear
Worker-owned cooperative -- so many competing idealistic visions, little control or organization.

Qupqugiaq Cooperative Cafe
A core group of idealists who learned from mistakes of the previous cooperative. It was a beautiful vision; but it never became economically sustainable.

Hugo's Place
An unusual mix of Mexican food with American cheeseburgers and french fries.

Huzanity Cafe
At Huzanity Cafe customers prepare their own food at various stations. The elimination of the cook and most other staff transfers responsibility for the food to the person who consumes it. This reduces specialization, hierarchy, and authority, which characterize our age. And it sets the stage for a change in the dependent, structured human relations, which are typically a result. It also puts strangers side by side in one of the most fundamental acts of humanity—food preparation. Click here for more.

year long interlude

Dolce Edibles. August 1, 2003 - March 19, 2004
Cafe & bakery. Became popular after a rush of media attention in the fall; after business declined dramatically, was unable to pay its bills.

Istanbut Cafe
This new cafe opened in April, 2005, and is a great place!
